1st Lieutenant Brian Carrera became the APMS Cavazos Intern at the University of Arizona Wildcat Battalion on October 1, 2024. He was born in Richmond Virginia and lived in Guatemala for 7 years before going back to Virginia at the age of 10. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a Minor in Spanish in 2022 and commissioned into the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry branch. 

1st Lieutenant Carrera’s first assignment was in 2-327 IN “No Slack”, 1st BDE, 101st Airborne Division. While serving with his unit, he graduated from air assault school and shortly after deployed to Romania and Germany where he served as the BN AS-3 planner, the Battalion Unit Movement Officer, the Romanian Liaison, coordinating training and positive relationships with Romanian forces, and was part of the Joint Multinational Readiness Center Rotation 01-24. Shortly after, he was placed in charge of a heavy weapons platoon for 2nd PLT, D Co. 2-327th IN, a light armored infantry platoon that can conduct mobility and heavy support for the battalion. After his time as a platoon leader, he was placed the air assault instructor for the battalion, certifying and successfully producing 18 air assault qualified Soldiers. 1st Lieutenant Carrera also took the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT), maintaining a 3/2 proficiency in Spanish.  

 

1st Lieutenant Carrera’s military schools include Infantry Basic Officer Leadership Course, Air Assault School, and Unit Mobility Officer School. His awards include the Norwegian Ruck March Badge, 4 Army Achievement Award Medals, National Defense Service Medal, and Army Service Medal.
