Professor of Military Science

LTC Michael Gabrhel became the Professor of Military Science for the University of Arizona Wildcat Battalion on 21 July, 2021. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the United States Military Academy at West Point where he was commissioned as an Aviation (AV) Officer in 2005. LTC Gabrhel also holds a Master of Science in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University. His military education includes the Aviation Basic Course, Aviation Captain's Career Course, Command and General Staff Officer's College, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Level C Course, Airborne and Air Cavalry Leader's Course.

LTC Gabrhel's first assignment was to Fort Rucker, Alabama for Initial Entry Rotary Wing (IERW) training. Upon completion of flight school First Lieutenant Gabrhel received order to Fort Hood, Texas to join the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade. He spent 15 months as a platoon leader with Bravo Company, 4th Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment prior to deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 08-10. Six months into the deployment, now Captain Gabrhel, moved into the Battalion Operations Section where he would serve the remainder of the deployment as a Battle Captain and Assistant Operations Officer.

Upon redeployment Captain Gabrhel moved into the Battalion Personnel Section and served as the Battalion Adjutant and S1. Following six months as the S1, Captain Gabrhel assumed command of Alpha Company 4th Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment. Michael deployed with Alpha Company to Mazar-E-Sharif, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 10-11. During the 12-month deployment the company supported ISAF ground forces in the Regional Command-North division of Afghanistan. Captain Gabrhel redeployed the company to Fort Hood in June of 2011 and promptly relocated Alpha Company's personnel and equipment to Fort Bliss as part of the BRAC initiative. Following 20 months as Commander of Alpha Company, Captain Gabrhel relinquished the guidon and returned to Fort Rucker to complete the Aviation Officer Advanced Course and attend SERE. 

Captain Gabrhel then moved to San Jose, CA and was assigned to the United States Army Student Detachment under the Advanced Civil Schooling Program where he earned his Master of Science as a resident student at Stanford University. Upon graduating from Stanford in the summer of 2014, Captain Gabrhel was assigned as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY, where he served for two years. After completing his tour at West Point, now Major Gabrhel attended the Command and General Staff Officer's College at Fort Leavenworth, KS. 

Major Gabrhel was next assigned to the 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Bliss, TX where he served as the Squadron Operations Officer and Executive Officer for 3rd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, and the Brigade Executive Officer. During his time with 1AD CAB, he deployed again to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel. Lieutenant Colonel Gabrhel's most recent assignment was with the United States Army Futures Command, based out of Austin, TX, where he served as the Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General. 

LTC Gabrhel's awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with "V" Device and the Army Achievement Medal. He has also earned the Senior Aviator Badge, Combat Action Badge and the Parachutist Badge. LTC Gabrhel is a noble member of the Order of Saint Michael (Aviation) and a silver and gold spur holder.

LTC Gabrhel hails from Tucson, Arizona where he met his beautiful wife, the former Ms. Terez K. Lopez and they have four precocious daughters, Addison, Senna, Elizabeth, and Alexandria.
